Jade Garden Restaurant in Gensan, A Secret Chinese Gem Resto

Jade Garden Restaurant is an overlooked Chinese restaurant in Gensan. It is not commonly known but serves one of the best and affordable Chinese goodness in General Santos City. Their restaurant used to be located at the area where Ranchero is now situated. Jade Garden has now transferred to their new location at National Highway, after Supreme Hardware / 3G Hotel, fronting EMCOR, inside a Shell Station compound.

Funnily enough, it was so overlooked that a friend from Davao introduced me to the restaurant in 2023. It was sitting at National Highway near SM City almost always desolate. It has been there for years but I only tried their food last 2023. And after experiencing their food, I invited my family and held several occasions there. They are one of the few restaurants in General Santos City that serves authentic Peking Duck, delicious Hainanese chicken, Hongkong style cuisines and my all-time favorite – their Lechon Macau.

I was saddened when I found out they were closed and replaced by Ranchero but was hyped to find that they just transferred to a new location. Now, with their new location, they offer more drinks like cold beverages, coffees and floats.

Apart from that, they are the only restaurant in Gensan serving the famous “flying noodles”.

Review

My family and I has frequented the restaurant several times and each time I share this to a friend, their experience was always great. Now, with their new location, they have earned more traction, and I am happy to learn that they added new drinks and set meals like their Hong kong Platter.

For this review, I invited seven more people to help me rate the food experience, so the rating is graded by an average of eight people.

Following are what we ordered – crispy birthday noodles which is designed like a flying noodle, pork siomai, steamed spareribs, shrimp salad, Yang Chow Fried Rice, roasted hongkong chicken, soy chicken, and their lechon macau.

For drinks, we ordered iced coffees – cappuccino, mocha, caramel macchiato. For cold drinks, two cucumber lemonade jr, evo strawberry sparkle, apple s15 sparkle and big apple float.

The place and ambiance are great and very conducive for a nice dinner. They have an indoor and outdoor dining. The staff is very nice, attentive, and helpful. I would like to mention our server, Miss Maymay, for being so cool and friendly. I noticed that she handled the customers well despite seeing that they were short staffed at the time. I hope they give her a raise as she was waiting tables with such high energy despite it being already late at night. She was always respectful even after working with an irate customer which wasn’t her fault.

Other than that, their staff is very attentive and delightful. The only hiccups we experienced was that the additional rice orders came a little late.

With our food, I’ll start with their dimsums – steamed spareribs and pork siomai. Their siomai was one of the most underwhelming food from our order gaining 6.8/10. The meat still has the usual unnerving smell of pork which means that the siomai lacked spices to rinse the smell off. It was not seasoned well enough, looks sad, and lacked color.

Siomai

Their spareribs, however, although small in serving size gained a score of 7.5/10. It was too bony and lacked meat but was flavorful. Though, the smell of pork (langsa) is there which affects the overall experience.

Spareribs

Their crispy birthday noodles had the best presentation out of the food and was a fun experience overall to witness. The noodles were towering and pierced together by a pair of chopsticks and drizzled down with a steaming sauce. We rate an 8/10 for the crispy birthday noodles as it tastes like thick seafood based lomi. It’s also filled with a lot of allergens so when eating this, buyer beware. It has pieces of shrimps, crabs and squid.

Their shrimp salad used to be one of my favorites. However, it seems that the shrimp salad has now downgraded both in taste and portion size. It is an 8.5/10. Despite that, it still remains a delicious salad but it is more fruit cocktails now than shrimp. The sauce is also wetter than the usual thick cream.

We faced off the two chicken styles we ordered, the soy chicken which is almost similar to a chicken adobo with some Chinese soy sauce mix and their Hongkong style fried chicken that had a really nice crisp and fried until it has a beautiful golden yellow color. The overall favorite is the soy chicken as it wraps the palate with a strong umami and savory flavor compared to the Hongkong style fried chicken which had a basic salt and pepper flavor. Soy chicken – 9/10. Hongkong Chicken – 7/10.

The lechon macau earned an outstanding 9.5/10. It has been my family’s favorite. I think what was lacking for it to earn a perfect score was that it wasn’t as crispy and the lack of their flavorful sauce to pair it with. The serving size looked smaller as well compared to the last time we dined.

As to their drinks, the cucumber lemonade was so big that it can even be shared by two people. It was not water downed nor was it too sweet. It’s a perfect thirst quencher – a 10/10. I do advise to request for more sugar with their coffee especially if you dislike bitter drinks. Their coffee drinks scored at 7/10.

However, the star of their drinks which was a new addition to their menu is their sparkle drinks. I would highly recommend ordering the apple flavor. It’s absolutely a 10/10. It is refreshing and has a delicious citrusy popping bobba which is a nice experience. Their apple float as well with popping bobba and topped with an ice cream is a 10/10. Their strawberry sparkle was delicious but the strawberry syrup tastes almost medicinal like a Calpol. It’s just a 7/10.

Though there were changes in the quality of their food, the tastes seems to be the same. I would highly recommend dining at Jade Garden Restaurant if you are looking for new flavors to sample. So far, people I’ve recommended to try their food had nice experience. You can also sample by ordering their rice bowls. The serving size is also huge.

Hopefully, this review would help Jade Garden Restaurant be known in General Santos and more people can try and experience good Chinese food at a generally affordable price.
