Food Review
When it comes to American food, I associate it with good old fried food. Unhealthy but sinfully good. For picky eaters, I’ve noticed that they usually gravitate towards American food because who doesn’t like fat and flavors. When I found out about Gabe’s Diner, I was interested and wanted to dip my fingers into those fried goodness.
The area is very aesthetically pleasing with a retro-themed vibe. It does remind you of American diners portrayed in movies. It’s colorful, clean, and spacious. It does tend to get hot though as the AC seems to be not completely working. You can opt for indoor or alfresco dining.
When we visited, we tried and sampled out one dish per area. For their pasta we tried carbonara, for their appetizers we tried mozarella sticks, for their burgers we tried their double cheese with bacon, for their mains we tried their Tex Mex rice, for their diner dogs we tried Sloppy Joe, for their pizza we tried their famous Steak Pizza (medium well), and of course, to complete the diner experience we ordered milkshakes. We had double chocolate, Oreo, and Strawberry banana.
Following are our rating per food and our opinion. This score is rated and averaged between three people.
Carbonara – 9/10. Their carbonara is one of the best dishes I’ve tried from what we ordered. It has a unique smoky flavor from the bacon or pancetta used. It is al dente and not swimming in milky sauce but still very creamy.

Sloppy Joe – 7.3/10. Their sloppy joe would have earned a high score if the bread wasn’t stale. They have a nice flavor of their chili but it lacked some kick into it. Perhaps if they can provide an option on the spice level or made it mildly spicy then it would have been better. We do enjoy spicy chili on sloppy joes. The beef on the chili seems to be lacking as well. However, the hotdog used was very delicious.

Double Cheese with Bacon Burger – 7/10. Their double cheeseburger has a nice patty. The beef is very juicy but it lacked flavor. It would have been better if it had more salt or pepper in it. What threw their burger off is the bread used. It was dry and had a taste we didn’t like. Perhaps a different bread like a good brioche bread, then the flavors might be better. We weren’t also a big fan of the sauce. It had a tex-mex spice flavor that did not jive well with everything.

Mozarella Sticks – 7/10. Their mozarella sticks would have earned a high score if it wasn’t for it being more on breading than the cheese. The cheese seems to be a really thin piece covered with a thick breading. It is also drier than the other mozarella sticks we’ve tried.

Texmex Rice – 5.6/10. This is the dish that we overall dislike from what we ordered. I was also rooting for it as it being different and provides a distinguishing American food. However, the texmex rice lacked salt. It was also overpowered by the smoky flavor. If they used liquid smoke they may have overused it as it tastes burnt. The mushroom used was also really bitter which was not a fun surprise on each bite.

Steak Pizza – 7/10. I was not able to try the pizza so I am not able to validate the scoring of my family. However, they find the pizza and the steak dry. That is the only comment I heard from them.

I do highly recommend their milkshakes. Like any diners in American movies, you can just hang out at the diner to order milkshakes. Their milkshakes are one of the best milkshakes you can find in General Santos.
A very high score of 10/10 for their double chocolate milkshake. It’s a very rich chocolate milkshake with thick consistency. It is a bitter sweet chocolate goodness in a huge glass and you can taste that it uses real chocolate or cocoa.
Oreo milkshake – 8/10. It’s really delicious but it would have been a 10 if it was not too overpowered by the milk and it had more oreo chunks.
Strawberry banana Milkshake – 8/10. If you are a fan of fruity milkshakes, then you can opt for their strawberry banana milkshake. You can taste fresh and delicious ripe banana and has a nice flavor combination with strawberry. My only concern is that their strawberry syrup used has that medicinal aftertaste.
