Davao’s current food trend seems to be the upscaling of restaurants that serve comfort food that the general public loves. This strategy seems to be a smart business move, allowing restaurants to build a loyal following before transitioning into mid- to high-end establishments. Among all the restaurants embracing this trend, Momo’s Comfort Food is one I’ve particularly looked forward to.

The culinary geniuses behind Momo’s Comfort Food have now expanded with a modern resto bar. Coloseo, located at Pryce Tower Road, F. Torres St., Davao City, across from Ascendido Building, has become the go-to spot for people to hang out, enjoy the night, and unwind.

The interior of Coloseo is a far cry from the cozy vibes of Momo’s Comfort Food Cafe. It’s been elevated to create a fine dining atmosphere but at an affordable price. Coloseo feels like the chic older sister of Momo’s, offering cocktails and bistro-style dishes. While the Momo’s favorites are still on the menu, they’re presented in a more refined way, with some exciting additions.

Its place is lively and buzzing with people. The stained glass and stunning lighting provide comfort to weary individuals seeking a place to unwind and destress after a busy workweek.

Food Review
We’ve been meaning to visit Coloseo but it was always packed with people most especially at night where all tired young professionals want a respite from work or college.
Luckily, we were able to secure a seat on a late Sunday afternoon for what was meant to be a brunch.

I started my meal with a hot coffee and decided to try something peculiar —an espresso-based drink called Amethyst Yam. It piqued my interest because it features ube, Filipino ingredient that’s putting the Philippines internationally in the culinary space. As a big fan of ube, I was really curious to see how it would work in a coffee drink. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. I could barely taste the ube at all. It was just sprinkled on the side of the cup, offering only a faint hint of flavor. It felt more like a typical coffee with milk, lightly infused with ube flavoring. It felt like a bait for ube-lovers. I’d rate it a 6/10. The expectations were definitely higher for this one.

I ordered my favorite dish of Crispy Chicken in White Sauce and as usual, it did not disappoint. I’ve always been a fan of their chicken in white sauce and it was a delight to have a taste of it again. The chicken was crisp and tender on the inside and the white sauce was lathered generously. Although, at its price point, it was hurting my wallet a little. I did enjoy the addition of the green salad side and it has a really tangy sauce that was a refreshing palate cleanser. I give the dish a really high 8.5/10.

We ordered their Chicken Garden Salad which seems to be a favorite for the local diners. Almost every table had an order so we couldn’t resist being curious and ordered ourselves. The fried chicken slices were generous. It has crunchy lettuce and a good balance of fried chicken poppers, but I was not a big fan of the sauce as it was too sweet for my liking. I liked the sauce used on the side of my chicken in white sauce better. It was a good 7.5/10.

Lastly, we tried their bacon and cheese penne. It was a decent pasta dish with very creamy and savory white sauce. It had generous bacon bits compared to other restaurants, but the pasta was too soft and mushy. I enjoy my pasta al dente but their pasta seemed to be overcooked as it was too soft and mushy. It would have garnered a higher score if it wasn’t for this. A good rating of 7/10 for the taste.

Restaurant Rating
Food:
It has your Momo’s favorite dish but at a pricier budget range. There are some cocktails, coffee, and dessert addition. It’s decent. Not bad, not good but err on the side of comfort.
Value for money:
Its price point is midrange. Their menu is limited. Nothing that really stands out that I have not tried from other restaurants before. Although, if you are looking for a comfortable yet sophisticated place to hang out with a tight budget, it can be a good option. Generous serving.
Location:
Really good location that is highly accessible. For commuters, not difficult to find a ride. Easy to locate. Spacious and really aesthetically beautiful. Place is big and can accommodate more than 50 people. Comfortable dining experience and very chic as well. Place, however, can get easily packed especially on weekends.
Service:
Good service and attentive service staff. Clean utensils.
Variety:
Very limited options. No seafood or fish option. Nothing that stands out. Comfort fried dishes at a higher price rate. Cocktail additions.
