Ristorante Spirale serving Italian Goodness Since 2008

There are restaurants in Davao City that has stand through the test of time despite new restaurants popping here and there. One of these restaurants is Ristorante Spirale which is one of the pioneering restaurants that offers Italian cuisine in the good city of Davao. They have been serving delicious pizza, pasta, and Italian dishes since 2008.

The restaurant has also been featured in Tatler Asia as one of Davao City’s restaurant offering great Italian cuisine. Ristorante Spirale is the brainchild of Davao’s renowned chef Annie Cacho-Garcia and her husband Raffy Garcia. Chef Annie Cacho-Garcia is also the brain behind ArtisAna, a comfort gourmet restaurant that elevates traditional Filipino dishes.

Ristorante Spirale is one of the few restaurants in Davao City that offers pizza made from wood fired oven. They also offer a buy one take one promo of their delicious pizza from 2PM to 5PM. Other than their pizza, they are famous for their pizzata which is a crispy thin flat bread that is layered with three different cheeses and you can choose variety of toppings. If you are not up for a big pan of pizza, then you can opt for their pizzata. There are many Italian dishes you can choose from their menu like their roast garlic chicken, ravioli di ricotta, mushroom and guanciale risotto, gnocchi, their pasta selection and their famous desserts.

How to Get There

It’s located at Damosa IT Park Mamay Rd, Lanang. Specific address would be Unit 10 Damosa Business Center, Lanang.

They are open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00PM.

They accept cash, Gcash, and credit card payments.

The Place and The Ambiance

Spirale Ristorante has a rustic vibes that uses a specific color combination of yellow, green, red and brown in its interior. The restaurant, compared to other restaurants nowadays, look dated and may not be too appealing to the younger generations. However, if you look beyond the superficiality of aesthetic interiors, this restaurant packs an amazing gastronomical experience.

The Spending

The food is on the expensive side but offers a bigger size portion comparable to normal Filipino single served dishes. They offer main course, sandwiches, appetizers, pasta, salad, pizza, pizzata and homemade pasta, risotto, and gnocchi. They also serve delicious desserts per piece or the whole cake.

Their main course is priced around P440 up to P2,380 which is the price of their ribeyed steak. Though the main course costs a bit, this can already be shared between 2-3 pax.

Their sandwich ranges from P280 to P310. Desserts are priced at P200 to P230 per slice. Whole cakes can cost from P1,300 to P1,600 but you would need to order at least 1 day prior. For beverages they have sodas, juices, coffee and wines.

Their appetizer can cost from P340 to P520. Pasta can cost around P380 to P490 but their homemade pasta like gnocchi which is a pasta made out of potatoes and ravioli which is stuffed pasta (like dumpling) can cost around P510 to P550. You can choose whether to opt for a blue cheese cream or a tomato based sauce over your ravioli. Unfortunately, gnocchi seems to be unavailable when we dined.

Their pizzata can cost from P310 to P360 and their pizzas are around P350 to P700. They also serve specials of the day that can be shown on their black board menu at their counter area.

Review

During our sunday stroll at SM Lanang, I had the urge to try a new restaurant that is not in the mall. I thought of Ristorante Spirale as I remembered someone recommended this to me when I found that my to-go-to Italian/European restaurant has already closed. It has been a while since I’ve had authentic Italian food so I went and visit Ristorante Spirale.

My first impression was that I found the place dated with its design. It wasn’t peak hour and found the place almost empty. We visited this at a slow hour and only two tables were occupied. I am not a person who quickly judges interior aesthetics of a restaurant but since I do not know anything about the restaurant other than it was recommended to me, I was not sure what to expect of the food.

We proceeded to order Garbriele pizzata, ravioli di ricotta in blue cheese cream, Italian pot roast, and a lemon meringue pie.

We start of with the garbriele pizzata. We were offered with a plateful of thin flat bread topped with three different cheese with cream, bacon bits, and garlic topped with aragula. I am not an aragula person and I thought it was just another type of lettuce but adding them to the dish enhances the flavor of the pizzata. I am converted to being an aragula enjoyer. Their garbriele pizzata is super savory. Despite the bacon bits being small in terms of bread to protein ratio, it’s enough to pop an umami flavor. Add in the aragula leaves and it elevates the taste adding some peppery bitter herb flavor. I do find the bread very dry though. It may need some drizzling of more olive oil. I rate their garbriele pizzata as a 7.5/10 without the aragula but an 8/10 with the aragula.

The next stop is their ravioli di ricotta. When dining in Italian restaurants, I always opt to choose to order these three dishes – gnocchi (if offered), risotto, or their ravioli (or any specialty pasta). I then decide whether the restaurant is recommendable with just these three dishes. Why? Pasta is the pride of Italian people. Pizza can be replicated and can be delicious despite not being prepared in an Italian manner. But homemade pasta especially gnocchi and ravioli are difficult to master. Risotto, as well, though having simple ingredients require some certain discipline and difficult to achieve perfection.

When the ravioli di ricotta arrived, I was amazed at how aromatic the smell is. The ravioli is filled with ricotta cheese and spinach. There were just around 10 to 15 pieces of ravioli swimming in a pool of thick blue cream cheese sauce. It was so savory and packed with flavor that you will get easily satiated by just eating half of the total pieces in the plate. The cream had a strong herb flavor like that of a pesto. The ravioli is fully packed as well with the right cheese-to-spinach ratio unlike other ravioli that has more cheese than spinach or more spinach than cheese which don’t balance the flavor. I would rate their ravioli di ricotta 10/10. However, I would need to try their ravioli di ricotta with tomato sauce to taste the difference.

Next stop is their Italian pot roast. The serving is very generous as the pot roast is swimming in tomato sauce. You can taste that the tomato sauce is not generically bought and was created with certain flavorful spices. Their potatoes are not mushy. It has a bite into it and has the right texture I enjoy. It was not overcooked nor undercooked. The beef roast is also really soft and melts in your mouth. It’s sweet, tangy and savory. I give it a 9.5/10. It would have been a 10/10 but I find it saltier than it should have been. You would need to pair it with rice to balance out the flavor.

Lastly, we finished strong with their beautiful lemon meringue pie. I am a big fan of lemon-flavored desserts and I can say I have now found my new to-go-to lemon dessert place. Their lemon meringue pie is an 11/10. It is the right balance of sweetness and tartness. It’s aesthetically pretty with droplets of caramelized sugar over its meringue. Right texture of the crust and perfect consistency of the lemon curd. The sweetness of the meringue perfectly marries the zestiness of the lemon curd. The meringue also does not deflate even after cracking it open and slicing the pie into a half.

Bonus point is that they make their own hot sauce which is definitely a 10/10. It’s creamy and spicy. I suspect they add cheese to their hot sauce. I had to ask if they sell their homemade hot sauce because I was willing to steal a bottle in my bag. Please note, this is just a hyperbole and I am not a criminal. 😀

I do want to buy a bottle but their service staff said it’s not for sale. They did give us a packet from their pizza takeouts so we can have samples. Here’s me hoping that they sell it one day.

Overall, my dining experience is great and I would highly recommend Ristorante Spirale to anyone craving Italian dishes. My only hope is that they reach a higher audience from the younger generation so the young ones can experience what entails a good dining experience remove the aesthetics of a good interior. But for now, I hope my little review would entice younger gens to dine here to experience for themselves why this has stood the test of time.
